how to waterproof golf shoes

There is nothing worse than going for a few rounds of golf and having water squelch beneath your feet, not only that but your feet will be cold which will affect your overall game. For that reason it’s vitally important that you learn how to waterproof your golf shoes.

You will need to clean the shoes, dry them, and then apply some sort of waterproof or water-resistant spray to the shoe. In this guide, we will break it down step by step…

Step 1: Lay out your waterproofing and cleaning equipment

Firstly you will need some equipment. A clear fiber cloth, some water, spray, and soap. You will also need some form of waterproof spray we would recommend x. This guide is specifically for a leather golf shoe so if you don’t have a leather golf shoe then you will need to choose an appropriate guide.

Step 2: Clean the golf shoe

Before we make the golf shoe waterproof we first need to ensure the golf shoe is properly clean. This will provide a good surface for our waterproof spray to stick to, if we were to apply to spray first the surface would not be appropriate. When cleaning the shoe you want to ensure that you do not get the shoe too wet, this could damage the surface of the shoe. Instead, apply a little water to a cloth and begin to wash your shoe using small circular motions to remove all the excess grime and dirt.

Step 3: Leave the shoe to dry

This step is pretty easy! Simply leave your golf shoes to dry. Do not place them in a warm place to try and speed up the drying process as this could damage the leather. Instead, just have a bit of patience and leave the shoe to dry.

Step 4: Polish your golf shoe

Once the golf shoes are dry it’s time to polish them. Use the regular leather polish that you normally use. Apply plenty of polish and begin to buff your shoe using small circular motions. We recommend using a toothbrush and a small cloth. You will need to make sure your golf shoes are dry before we begin to apply the waterproof spray, make sure you leave your shoes for long enough so that the polish is 100% dry, this will give you a good surface to apply your spray.

Note: make sure to remove your laces before polishing the shoe.

Step 5: Use your waterproof spray

The final step is to finally waterproof the golf shoe. You will want to purchase yourself a high-quality waterproof spray. We have recommended one below that you can purchase. The spray will be in a small canister and you want to spray from a distance of around 30cm to ensure you apply the spray evenly. Make sure you read the recommendation for how often you will need to waterproof your golf shoes, some sprays last longer than others once applied.

TIP: You may want to apply multiple coats to the shoe, you will need to leave the coating to dry before applying the next coat. The will give you even more chance of making sure the shoes stay dry.
